When Should I Have Hand Therapy?

If you are experiencing hand and arm pain then Hand Therapy may be warranted. You may contact your physician to help you to make this determination and will write a referral for therapy after examination and diagnostic testing. Hand therapy is often recommended as the primary form of conservative treatment and may be prescribed in combination with medication for pain or swelling. Studies show early intervention reduces the likelihood that your condition will become chronic. It can also prevent further impairment & generalized de-conditioning of your body resulting from disuse as well as help avoid surgery. Hand Therapy is also referred post- operatively to facilitate recovery from surgery and help restore full function.

What will Hand Therapy cost?

Although insurance companies offer a spectrum of plan options, most health insurance policies cover the majority of the costs of Hand Therapy. Our staff will contact your insurance company to verify your benefits. We will then inform you of any out-of-pocket expenses that you may incur (deductible and/ or co-payments).

If you subscribe to a managed care plan with no out-of-network benefits, consult with your directory of preferred providers or the therapy office you've selected to determine if they are in network, or request your physician for an out of network referral.

If you have the option to seek care out-of-network, you are not limited to a list of participating providers and can see the therapists of your choice.

How Do I Begin Therapy?

Please call our office to make arrangements to begin therapy. You have two choices: You may schedule an appointment for therapy without a physician referral (this may preclude your insurance company from reimbursing us for the services you receive) or you may see your physician for a referral so that your insurance company covers the cost of the therapy received in our clinic.

We communicate with the referring physicians regarding your progress.

You will receive the following:

  • A thorough examination and personalized treatment plan
  • One-on-one hands on care
  • A complete spectrum of therapy and exercise equipment
  • Use of the showers and locker rooms for your convenience
  • The facility is clean, the atmosphere pleasant, and the staff professional, motivating, and sincere
  • Our location is convenient to all of central New Jersey (Home or Office) and offers extended hours of operation to accommodate your busy schedule.

When will Hand Therapy end?

Discharge from Hand Therapy will take place when you, your therapist and physician have determined that you have achieved maximum benefit from the treatment. Your insurance company may also influence the frequency and duration of treatment because they may dictate the number of visits for which they will reimburse us. You should continue to perform your home exercise program after discharge from Hand Therapy. It will extend the benefits of your therapy, help you to continue to progress and prevent re-injury. We will outline a plan for gradual return to your pre-injury activities.

At time of discharge, we typically recommend our patients to join our MAX-FIT Programs to continue their cardio-fitness progress. We have found that the continued  programs improve the quality of life for our clients reducing their need for follow up care. Please refer to our MAX-FIT Programs.

What will I Experience at Jersey Central Physical Therapy and Fitness?

You will be greeted warmly when arriving for therapy and find yourself in a professional yet relaxed environment. After completing initial paperwork, you will be introduced to your therapist. The first therapy visit lasts can last up to 90 minutes in order to complete a thorough evaluation. Your therapist will take your medical history and will then assess your posture/alignment, function, sensation, joint range of motion, muscle strength & flexibility as well as the status of the involved body part(s). You should expect to learn more about your condition and the plan for your treatment in addition to discussing
your goals for recovery.

Treatment begins immediately and incorporates hands-on-work (such as soft tissue mobilization, joint manipulation, joint mobilization, range of motion & stretching, and strengthening) with a guided program of therapeutic exercise. Modalities may also be used as an adjunct to your treatment; they should never be the focus of your care. Treatment is not complete unless you are instructed in a home exercise program to supplement your work in therapy.

An individualized, functional and goal oriented therapy program is then devised to address your specific needs. This program will evolve as your condition progresses.
